I installed a small home solar battery system last autumn, mainly because my evening electricity bills were getting ridiculous. My rooftop panels make plenty of power at lunchtime, but our family uses the most energy after dinner, when the sun has disappeared. I paired a 24V LiFePO4 battery bank with a victron multiplus 24 3000 inverter/charger. I was nervous about wiring and configuration, so I paid an electrician to commission it rather than treating the battery like a weekend DIY project. The physical installation was straightforward: battery rack in the utility room, inverter on the wall, and a new monitoring connection to my home network.

The biggest difference is peak-hour savings. I set the battery to charge from solar first and discharge from around 4 p.m. until bedtime. On a normal sunny day, it runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and often the dishwasher without pulling much from the grid. Before storage, I regularly saw an evening spike on my smart meter. Now that spike is much smaller, and my monthly bill has fallen by roughly 25 to 30 percent, depending on weather and heating use. That number is more meaningful to me than a brochure's claimed payback period. I can see the battery state of charge drop while we cook, then recharge the next day. It has made solar self-consumption feel practical instead of theoretical.

One minor surprise was the battery reserve setting. I initially left it at 20 percent, but during a cloudy week the system reached that limit earlier than expected and imported power overnight. I raised the reserve to 30 percent and adjusted the charging schedule in the app. Nothing was broken; I had not allowed enough margin for several dull days. The energy monitoring also helped me spot that our electric heater was the energy hog.
