Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Getting our solar battery installed last autumn, I was mostly hoping to stop wasting midday solar power while buying electricity after sunset.
The installer paired a 10-kWh lithium battery with my rooftop panels and a v guard solar inverter. Installation took most of a day, although the electrician returned the next morning to tidy one cable and explain the battery settings.
The biggest change is my evening routine. Before storage, I ran the dishwasher and washing machine at night because daytime solar exports earned very little. Now the battery fills from the panels, then runs those appliances after dinner. During the utility's peak window, I also use stored energy for lights, my router, and the refrigerator.
My monthly bill has fallen from roughly $180 in summer to around $95, though weather and rates obviously vary. On cloudy weeks, the savings are smaller, but I still notice less grid electricity consumption. The app shows battery state of charge, solar production, and household load in one place, so I can see whether my habits match the settings.
I did have one mildly annoying hiccup. After a firmware update, the inverter stopped discharging at the scheduled time, leaving the battery nearly full the next morning. I checked the app, power-cycled the communications gateway, and waited about ten minutes. The schedule came back, but I called support anyway. They adjusted a time-zone setting remotely and explained that the update had reset it. Since then, it has been reliable.
What I appreciate most is not total energy independence; I still pull from the grid in winter. It is the quieter feeling that my solar power is doing useful work instead of disappearing during the afternoon. For my home, that balance has made the solar investment feel practical rather than futuristic for our household.
