Early last summer, I installed a tesla powerwall 10 kwh battery beside my garage after watching evening electricity rates climb. My rooftop solar panels covered much of our daytime use, but I still bought expensive grid power between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m., when we cooked dinner and ran the dishwasher.
The installer mounted the battery on a concrete wall, connected it to the inverter, and explained the backup settings. I reserved 25% for outages instead of chasing every possible kilowatt-hour of savings. That choice proved useful during a storm when the lights flickered but the refrigerator and internet stayed on automatically.
The biggest difference appears on my monthly bill. Before storage, I averaged about $185 in July and August. Last summer, after switching to time-of-use scheduling, my highest bill was $112. The battery charges from surplus solar during the afternoon, then supplies the house after peak rates begin. I can see the pattern in the app: solar fills the battery, the battery carries our evening load, and grid use barely registers.
It has not eliminated electricity costs. On cloudy days, I reach for grid power before bedtime, and winter production is weaker. Still, the daily bill savings feel real, especially because I no longer worry about running appliances during peak hours. The backup power also matters: short outages used to reset clocks and interrupt remote work. Now the change is almost invisible.
My only frustration was learning that charging pauses when the garage gets very hot. A support message explained the battery thermal protection, and charging resumed normally once temperatures fell. I have not expanded the system yet, but I left room for another battery if our usage grows. For now, solar storage has made our home cheaper to run and less vulnerable to grid interruptions. That feels worthwhile every month.
