Evenings became noticeably cheaper after I added a 10 kWh home battery to my rooftop solar setup. Before the battery, my panels exported most of their afternoon production while I bought electricity back during the expensive evening window. Now the battery stores that surplus and runs the house after sunset, which has made a bigger difference to my bill than I expected.
My setup uses a techfine inverter, solar panels, and a lithium iron phosphate battery mounted in the garage. The equipment is quiet, and I barely notice it except for the small status lights. The monitoring app shows solar generation, battery state of charge, household consumption, and grid import in one place. I also track it during weekdays. I check it most mornings with my coffee.
The real win is peak-hour usage. We usually cook dinner, run the dishwasher, and use the heat pump between 5 and 9 p.m. The battery now covers most of that demand. On sunny days, I often reach bedtime without importing from the grid. My daily electricity cost has dropped from roughly $4–$6 to around $1–$2, depending on weather and heating. That does not sound dramatic every day, but across a month it has been meaningful.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment during a cloudy week. The battery stopped discharging at 20 percent, which I initially thought was a fault. The app showed the reserve setting had been increased after a firmware update. I lowered the backup reserve, and normal operation returned immediately. Since then, I have kept a higher reserve before storms and accepted slightly less bill savings. Having stored solar power available during outages feels worth it, especially when the refrigerator and internet need to keep running.
For me, the battery is less about being energy-independent and more about using my own solar energy at the right time. That practical shift has made the investment feel worthwhile.
