That reduced the bill by about $38, which is modest, but meaningful over twelve months.
One minor surprise came during a cloudy week. The battery stopped discharging at 30% state of charge, even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I initially blamed the inverter, but the event log said “reserve protection.” I had accidentally raised the backup reserve to 30% while testing outage settings. Lowering it to 15% fixed the behavior immediately. That small lesson made me appreciate having a clear monitoring app and an installer who answered questions without trying to sell another component.
The biggest practical benefit is not dramatic independence; it's the quiet routine. On sunny days, my battery reaches full before lunch, then carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and evening cooking. During a short outage last winter, it switched to backup power fast enough that my router never rebooted. I did turn off the clothes dryer, since heavy loads drain the battery quickly. That kind of awareness is now second nature.
I still watch weather and keep realistic expectations: a battery cannot create energy, and several rainy days can leave it dependent on the grid. Still, pairing storage with my solar panels has made peak pricing less stressful. I may add another 5-kWh module, but this setup already feels practical rather than flashy.
