On a sunny Saturday, I finally installed a home battery beside my solar inverter. My reason was simple: our electricity bill jumped whenever the heat pump and oven ran after sunset. I wanted to use more of our solar power instead of selling it cheaply to the grid.
The setup took a day. The electrician mounted the battery, connected the monitoring meter, and configured a time-of-use schedule. I asked about solis v because that was the model name in my app. The app has been useful: I can see solar generation, battery charge, discharge, and consumption.
The biggest change appears between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. Instead of importing grid electricity during those expensive hours, my battery usually carries the refrigerator, lights, internet, and sometimes the heat pump. My bill savings average roughly $2–$4, which adds up to around $70 a month in winter. On bright days, the battery is full before noon, and we finish the evening with plenty remaining.
I did have one minor scare in the first week. The battery stopped discharging at 6:00 p.m., even though the app showed 58% capacity. I checked the breakers, restarted the inverter, and then discovered the backup reserve had accidentally been set to 60% during commissioning. Lowering it to 20% solved the problem immediately. It was a configuration issue, not bad hardware, but I appreciated finding it before a cold night.
Since then, my solar battery has quietly done its job. I still watch the state-of-charge on cloudy mornings and avoid running the clothes dryer during peak rates. I am not completely energy independent, but our grid purchases have dropped noticeably. For me, the real value is less dependence on expensive evening electricity and knowing that the solar energy I generate is available when my family actually needs it.
