Over the past year, my home solar and battery storage system has changed the way I think about electricity. The biggest difference has been using stored daytime solar power during the expensive evening hours. Before the battery, I would come home, turn on the oven, heat pump, and dishwasher, then watch my utility meter climb. Now my battery inverter automatically carries most of that load after sunset.
I have a solaredge hd wave inverter paired with a lithium iron phosphate battery bank. I did not install it myself; an electrician handled the wiring and commissioning. Setup took most of a day. The only surprise was that the battery enclosure needed more wall clearance than I originally expected, so we shifted it beside the garage door.
My bill savings are easiest to see in winter, when our utility uses time-of-use pricing. I programmed the energy management system to charge from rooftop solar between late morning and afternoon, then discharge during the evening peak. On a typical weekday, that saves me roughly $2 to $3 compared with running those appliances straight from the grid. It sounds modest, but over a month it usually knocks $55 to $75 off the bill.
I still buy electricity overnight sometimes, so I would not call myself energy independent. Still, seeing the battery state of charge at 80% before dinner feels useful.
One minor troubleshooting moment happened during a firmware update. The monitoring app showed the battery offline, although the house still had power. I waited ten minutes, restarted the gateway, and the connection returned. Customer support confirmed it was a hiccup.
Since then, the solar battery has been boring in the best possible way: predictable, quiet, and useful. For me, the win is using my own solar energy when grid electricity costs.
