Over the past six months, my solar battery has changed the way I use electricity. I have six solar panel units on the roof, but before adding storage, I still bought power every evening after the sun went down. Now the battery charges through the afternoon and carries us through the expensive hours.

My installer set the system to reserve 20 percent for outages and use the remaining capacity during the utility’s peak window. That setting has been effective. Our dishwasher, heat-pump water heater, refrigerator, and lights run from stored solar energy after dinner, when rates are highest. Looking at my bills, the energy charge has dropped by roughly $65 to $80 per month, depending on weather. I am not eliminating the bill, because fixed fees and cloudy days still count, but the difference is obvious.

The battery app is the useful feature. I can see solar production, household consumption, and the battery state of charge in time. One evening, I noticed the battery was barely discharging even though the app showed a full charge. I checked the settings and found that a software update had switched the operating mode to backup-only. I changed it back to self-consumption, and normal discharge resumed within a few minutes. It was a scare, but I appreciated being able to diagnose it without calling anyone.

During an outage last month, the essential circuits stayed on without interruption. The Wi-Fi router, freezer, a few lights, and my office were powered, although I did not run the oven or clothes dryer. That limitation feels reasonable for a home battery of this size.

So far, storage has not made me forget about conservation. I run laundry during sunny hours when possible. The biggest win is using my solar power at night instead of buying it at peak prices.
