Our solar lithium battery went live last spring, and the biggest surprise was how quickly it changed our evening routine. Before installation, I watched the sun set and then switched on the dishwasher, oven, and heat pump together, knowing those expensive peak hours were hitting our electricity bill. Now the battery charges from our rooftop solar during the afternoon and carries the house through the evening.
The first full month was not dramatic because cloudy weather reduced solar production, but our bill still fell by about thirty percent compared with the same month last year. By midsummer, our grid usage during peak pricing was almost zero on most days. I could see the difference in the utility app: instead of importing power at six in the evening, I was sending a small amount back to the grid. Net metering credits were modest, but avoiding those high-rate purchases mattered more.
The system is a 10 kWh solar battery storage unit, with a hybrid inverter and a simple monitoring app. Setup took one long day. The installers mounted the battery in our garage, but left enough clearance around it for inspection. I appreciated that they explained the backup settings instead of just handing me a password. I chose to keep 20% reserve for outages, and that decision paid off during a short storm outage.
The only annoying moment came two weeks later. The app showed the battery at 100%, but our evening load was still coming from the grid. I initially thought the inverter had failed. After checking the settings, I found a “backup only” mode enabled after a firmware update. I switched it back to self-consumption, and the battery immediately began discharging. A quick call to support confirmed nothing was physically wrong.
