Our solar edge battery went live last September, and the biggest change has been how little attention I pay to peak-hour electricity prices now. Before installation, I ran the dishwasher after dinner because that was convenient, even though our utility charged more from 4-9pm. Now the battery charges from my rooftop solar during the afternoon and carries the house through that expensive window.
On an ordinary weekday, I get home with the battery around 80% full. Cooking, running the heat pump, and washing clothes hardly touch grid power. The difference shows up clearly on my bill. My monthly electricity cost used to hover near $180 in winter and $125 in spring. Since adding this home battery, those numbers have fallen to roughly $112 and $68, respectively. It is not a dramatic zero-bill result, but saving $40–$70 a month feels real. The battery also gives me backup power during short outages.
The one hiccup happened. The monitoring app showed the solar battery at 3% even though the panels had produced plenty that day. After checking the inverter, I found the battery’s backup reserve had accidentally been set to 80% during a software update. That left only a small usable portion for normal cycling. I lowered the reserve to 25%, restarted the system, and it began charging normally again. The installer confirmed the setting the next morning, so the fix was thankfully simple.
I have since left the reserve at 30%, which seems like a sensible compromise between outage protection and daily savings. What I appreciate most is the quiet routine: the solar panels make power, the energy storage system saves it, and the battery uses it when rates are highest. After six months, I am still checking the app occasionally, but I no longer think about electricity every evening.
