Originally, I installed a solar battery beside my inverter last spring, mostly because our evening electricity use kept pushing us into expensive peak rates. The installer finished in half a day, and the setup was less disruptive than I expected. They connected it to our existing rooftop solar system, then tested the backup circuit and phone monitoring app. I chose a 10kWh lithium battery, which sounded modest, but it has been enough for our normal nights.
On sunny days, panels fill the battery by midafternoon. Instead of sending that cheap energy back to the grid, I save it for dinner, lights, dishwasher, and the heat pump after the sun disappears. Our utility plan charges almost twice as much from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Before storage, I used roughly 9–11 kWh from the grid during those hours. Now the solar battery covers nearly all of it, unless the day has been unusually cloudy. My monthly bill has fallen from about $180 to $105, averaging around $75 in savings. That’s not a dramatic promise from a brochure; it’s what I have actually seen across six bills, including one rainy month.
The only hiccup came in January. One morning, the app showed the battery at 100 percent, but the house was still drawing power from the grid. I nearly called the installer, then noticed the backup reserve had been set to 100 percent during a software update. That setting meant the battery was protecting its charge instead of running the house. I lowered the reserve to 20 percent, restarted the inverter, and everything returned to normal within a few minutes. Since then, I check the state of charge every couple of days, especially before a storm.
For me, the biggest benefit is predictable evening power, not energy independence or fancy app graphs.
