Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My rooftop solar system was already producing more power than we used at lunchtime, so watching that surplus flow back to the grid felt wasteful. The battery has changed that routine more than I expected.
On a typical sunny day, solar panels charge the battery by early afternoon. Around 4 p.m., the system switches from charging to powering the house, and it usually carries us through dinner, laundry, and the first part of the night. Our utility’s peak rate is nearly three times the overnight rate, so this simple shift has made the biggest difference. Before storage, our summer bills averaged about $145. Since installing it, they have been closer to $75, even though our air-conditioner use has not changed much. The exact savings vary with weather, but seeing the battery monitor show stored solar energy replacing peak-hour electricity is genuinely satisfying.
I initially left the backup reserve at 30 percent, which meant less energy was available for daily bill savings. Dropping it to 15 percent works better for us because outages are uncommon here. I have backup power for the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and a few outlets while using more of the battery every evening.
One small troubleshooting moment happened after a firmware update: the app showed the battery as offline even though it was working normally. Rebooting the gateway fixed it, and support answered my message the next morning. I would not call the battery a magic solution, and the upfront cost matters, but it has made our solar investment more useful. My only regret is not checking the installer’s monitoring app and warranty details more carefully. The battery’s clean “signature” is simple: charge from sunshine, avoid peak rates, and make the house feel less dependent on the grid.
