Having lived with rooftop solar for three years, I finally added a home battery last autumn, and the difference has been most noticeable after sunset. Before the battery, my panels exported a lot of cheap daytime electricity, while I bought power back during the expensive evening peak. That felt especially wasteful on clear days.
I chose a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and had it installed beside the inverter in my garage. The installer finished in one day, although getting the monitoring app and tariff schedule configured took another evening. I specifically wanted the system to charge from solar first and discharge between 4 and 9 p.m. That setting has been the biggest practical win.
On a normal sunny weekday, the battery reaches full charge around lunchtime. We then run the dishwasher, washing machine, and heat-pump water heater while the panels are producing. By dinner, the battery usually still has enough stored energy to carry the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and television through the peak period. My evening grid consumption has fallen from roughly 9 kWh to 2 kWh. Based on my utility’s time-of-use rates, that saves me about $1.50 to $2 on an average weekday, or close to $45 monthly once cloudy days are included. I am not pretending the battery erased my bill; the fixed connection charge remains, and winter production is much lower. Still, seeing the meter barely move during dinner is genuinely satisfying.
The one hiccup was the monitoring connection. For two mornings, shinelink x showed the battery stuck at 18% even though the inverter screen showed normal operation. I restarted the communications dongle and checked the Wi-Fi signal; after that, the state-of-charge readings updated correctly. It turned out to be a stale app display, not a storage failure. I now check the inverter first myself.
