Our solar battery has changed the way I use electricity, between 4 and 9 p.m. I installed a rosen powerwall beside my inverter last autumn, because our utility's peak-hour rates had become ridiculous. Before the battery, I watched the meter climb whenever we cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, or turned on the heat pump. Now the system charges from our rooftop solar during the afternoon and supplies the house after sunset.

The difference is easiest to see on the monthly bill. In sunny months, we used to export plenty of electricity at a low credit rate, then buy it back expensively in the evening. With battery storage, most of that surplus stays in the battery. Our evening grid consumption has dropped by roughly 70 percent, and our bill is usually $35 to $55 lower than it was during the same months last year. The savings vary with cloudy weather, but avoiding those peak rates has made the biggest difference.

I had a troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging overnight and showed a standby status in the app. I checked the operating schedule, and somehow the backup reserve had been set to 100 percent. Lowering it back to 20 percent fixed the problem immediately. I appreciated that the app showed the battery's charge level and reserve setting clearly; I didn't need to reset the system or call an installer.

What I like most is the automatic operation. I rarely think about the inverter or battery management now. During an outage, the backup power switched over quickly enough that the lights flickered, which gave me confidence. For me, the value is not energy independence. It is using more of my solar power, reducing peak-hour charges, and having backup power when the grid acts up.
