Yesterday, I checked my electricity app and realised the pylontech battery uk setup had quietly saved more money than I expected. I installed a 9.6kWh Pylontech battery alongside my solar panels last spring, mainly to avoid buying expensive grid electricity during the evening peak. Before the battery, our cooker, television, lights, and dishwasher pushed usage into the costliest hours. Now, most evenings run from stored solar energy.
The biggest difference is between about 4pm and 9pm. On sunny days, the battery reaches full charge by mid-afternoon, then discharges after sunset. Our smart meter still records some grid use, but the sharp evening spike has almost disappeared. Over the first three months, our electricity bill was roughly £38 lower per month than during the same period the previous year, despite using the washing machine more often. I know weather and tariffs change, so I am not treating that figure as guaranteed, but the saving is very noticeable.
One small troubleshooting moment taught me to check settings before blaming the hardware. During a cold spell, the battery stopped discharging overnight and I initially thought something had failed. The monitoring app showed it had reached its minimum state of charge, which I had set conservatively at 30%. I lowered that reserve to 20%, and normal operation returned the next evening. I kept the higher reserve for a while because I liked having backup capacity during power cuts, but eventually settled on 25% as a practical compromise.
The system has been refreshingly boring since then, which I consider a success. I rarely think about the solar battery unless I am checking the app or planning when to run appliances. It has not made us completely independent from the grid, but our household energy bills feel far less exposed to peak-hour prices, and the stored solar power is being used rather than exported cheaply.
