Running my solar battery after sunset has changed how I think about electricity. I installed a 10 kWh home energy storage system last spring, mainly to use the solar power from my roof after the panels stopped producing. Installation itself was straightforward, although electrician spent time checking wall location and adding a breaker for battery inverter.

The biggest difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when my utility charges its highest rate. Before the battery, I would come home, turn on the oven, run the heat pump, and watch the meter climb. Now the solar battery handles most of that evening load. On sunny days, it usually reaches 100% by mid-afternoon, and I end the night with roughly 20–30% remaining. My monthly bill has fallen from around $185 to $105 on average, with the best month dropping below $80. The exact savings vary with weather and how much heating we use, but the change is easy to see.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. During a cloudy week, the battery stopped discharging at the expected rate. The monitoring app showed a warning about temperature, and I initially assumed something had failed. It turned out the battery was protecting itself in a cold garage. After I improved the insulation around the equipment area—not covering the ventilation—and reset the inverter, normal operation returned. The installer also confirmed the prismatic battery cells were healthy.

I appreciate that I can check battery capacity, solar generation, and household consumption, but I rely more on the bill than graphs. For me, the value of energy storage is simple: less expensive grid electricity during peak hours and a little more backup security when the power goes out. It has not eliminated my bill, but it has made my system more useful.
