Solution Solar Inverter
Our biggest surprise after installing a powerwall lithium ion battery was how quickly our evening electricity use changed. Before the battery, our solar panels produced plenty of power during the day, but we still bought electricity after dinner when rates were highest. Now, the battery stores the excess solar energy and runs much of the house through the evening.
During the first full month, our utility bill dropped from about $185 to $72. The exact savings vary with weather and our heating use, but the difference was obvious. I usually check the monitoring app while making dinner, and it shows the battery discharging instead of pulling expensive peak-hour electricity from the grid. On sunny days, the system often reaches full charge by mid-afternoon. By bedtime, it has covered the oven, lights, refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and sometimes the air conditioner.
The most useful feature has been the battery reserve setting. I keep a portion of the stored energy available for outages rather than letting the system drain completely every night. We had a brief outage during a storm, and the transition was so quick that I only noticed because the app sent an alert. The refrigerator stayed on, the lights did not flicker, and I was able to keep working from home.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. For two days, the battery stopped charging to its usual level. The monitoring screen showed reduced solar production, so I first suspected the energy storage system. It turned out that several days of smoke and cloud cover had limited the solar panels. Once the weather cleared, the battery returned to normal without any service call.
For me, the solar battery is most valuable because it shifts my own solar power into the hours when I need it. I am not eliminating every electric bill, but the combination of solar panels, lithium battery storage, and peak-rate savings has made our monthly costs much more predictable.
