Nearly six months ago I added a 10 kWh solar battery to my rooftop system, and the biggest difference has been how little electricity I now buy during the evening.
My home already had ongrid solar, so this was not about going completely off-grid. I wanted to store midday solar energy instead of sending most of it back to the grid for a small credit, then purchasing power when the tariff jumped in the late afternoon.
Installation was easier than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside my inverter and added a monitoring meter. The only nuisance was waiting for the utility approval to activate the export settings. Once it was running, I set the battery to charge from excess solar first, then discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when our rates are highest.
On sunny days, the battery reaches 100 percent before lunch, and our electric meter barely moves after dinner. Before installing it, the air conditioner, dishwasher, and induction cooktop all competed during expensive hours. Now the battery handles that load quietly. My first full bill was $42 lower than the same month last year, despite hotter weather. It is not a dramatic zero-dollar bill, but the saving feels real, especially because the battery is using energy I generated myself.
I did have one minor scare in winter. One morning the monitoring app showed the battery at 0 percent, even though the forecast promised sun. The system was fine; a tripped backup-load breaker had stopped charging. I reset it, watched the battery begin accepting solar power, and called the installer to confirm the wiring. Since then, I check the breaker after storms rather than panic. That small lesson mattered: good battery storage is not entirely set-and-forget, but the daily routine is simple overall for me.
