on grid inverter

Nearly six months into using my home battery, I finally understand why neighbors kept talking about storing solar power instead of exporting everything immediately.

The installation was less dramatic than I expected, although the electrician spent most of an afternoon checking the existing on grid inverter, meter, and backup wiring. Once the solar battery was connected, I changed the app setting so it charged from rooftop solar first, rather than the grid.

That small setting has made the biggest difference to my bill.

My utility uses expensive time-of-use rates between four and nine in the evening, exactly when our cooking, laundry, and air conditioning usually overlap. Before installing the battery, I sent much of my afternoon solar energy back to the grid and then bought it back at the highest rate.

Now the battery starts discharging around four thirty, and I watch the power flow on the monitoring screen occasionally, mostly because I am still weirdly fascinated by it.

During sunny weeks, the battery usually carries us through the entire evening. My monthly bill has fallen from roughly $180 to $105, though weather and utility charges make the exact savings vary. I do not treat that difference as a guaranteed payback, but seeing about $75 disappear most months feels genuinely useful.

The biggest practical benefit is avoiding evening spikes without changing our routine. We still run the dishwasher after dinner; I am not rationing electricity.

One cloudy weekend, the battery showed a low-temperature warning and stopped charging overnight. I checked the manual, cleared leaves around the outdoor unit, and restarted the controller. Charging resumed the next sunny morning.

I now glance at the battery's temperature and state of charge every few days. Capacity feels right here: enough for evening loads, not several rainy days.
