Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Using the battery storage system at my house has changed the way I think about electricity. I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last summer alongside my rooftop solar panels, mainly because my utility charges much more from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Before that, I was sending afternoon solar power back to the grid and buying electricity again after dinner at the highest rate.
The installation was simpler than I expected, although getting the inverter, battery cabinet, and backup panel through a narrow side gate took two installers most of a day. They mounted the battery in my garage, left clear space around it, and programmed it to reserve 25% for outages. I liked seeing the settings myself instead of having everything hidden inside an app.
My biggest surprise has been the peak-hour savings. On sunny days, the battery fills by early afternoon. At 4 p.m., I switch household loads over to stored energy: the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and usually the clothes dryer for one short cycle. My evening consumption now comes mostly from solar battery power. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 in summer to around $100, depending on how much I use the air conditioner. That feels more meaningful than the app’s colorful graphs.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment during a heat wave. The battery stopped discharging even though it showed 62% charge. The inverter displayed a temperature warning, and I realized the garage ventilation was poor. I opened the vent, let the room cool, and the system resumed normally. I now check ventilation before extreme weather.
I keep a multi volt lithium battery charger for small backup batteries, although it is separate from the main solar setup. For me, the best benefit is predictable evening coverage, not complete energy independence. After nearly a year, I would choose home battery storage again.
