I installed a lithium battery with my rooftop solar system last summer. The setup centered around a microtek sine wave inverter and 5kWh battery. I had an electrician do the wiring, but labeled circuits and learned the monitoring app.
The first week was more educational than exciting. I expected the battery to carry everything overnight, but the installer had left the water heater on the backup circuit. That drained the stored energy quickly. I moved that circuit off the backup panel, and the difference was immediate. Now the battery covers our fridge, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and a few fans after sunset.
The biggest improvement shows up on my bill. Before storage, the solar panels exported plenty of midday power, but we bought electricity between 6:00 and 9:00 p.m. Since adding the battery, I charge it from surplus solar during the afternoon and run those evening loads from stored power. My monthly bill fell from roughly $185 to $95 during the brightest months. It is not a dramatic saving every month—cloudy weather and winter still hurt—but peak usage is noticeably lower.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment in November. The battery stopped charging even though the panels were producing. The app showed a grid fault, and restarting the inverter did nothing. I found that a tripped breaker in the garage was the culprit. After resetting it, the system resumed normally. I now check the battery dashboard once a week and keep the inverter area dry and unobstructed.
For me, the real value is not total energy independence. It is quieter peace of mind during outages and fewer expensive evening units. I would size the battery slightly larger if buying again, but this setup has made solar power far more useful in everyday life. The solar battery also reduces how often I think about utility rates, which was an unexpected benefit. On sunny days, watching the battery charge feels satisfying because that stored energy later runs our home instead of going straight back to the grid.
