Solution Solar Inverter
After six months of watching my rooftop solar export power, I added a 10kWh home battery. The change is obvious after sunset, when we used to pull expensive grid electricity. Now it stores midday solar energy and runs our refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and washing machine through the evening. It is not magic, but our electricity bill is much less sensitive to peak rates.
I chose marine lifepo4 batteries for their long cycle life and thermal stability. The installer mounted the battery beside the inverter, added a backup subpanel, and connected the monitoring app. Setup took most of a day. On the second night, it stopped discharging at 30%. I thought it was broken, but a reserve setting was protecting backup capacity. I changed the reserve to 15%, and it worked normally. That small troubleshooting lesson was useful: battery settings matter as much as hardware.
Our utility uses time-of-use pricing, so I set the battery to charge from solar and discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. On sunny days, it covers all those expensive hours. Before storage, our summer bill averaged $185; afterward, it settled near $112, with similar usage. That is roughly $70 saved monthly, though cloudy weeks reduce the benefit. I like watching the energy flow: solar charges the battery, the battery carries dinner, and the grid fills the gap. During one evening outage, it powered our refrigerator, internet, and lights for six hours. The oven and air conditioner are excluded from the backup circuit, so I keep expectations realistic.
Overall, the lithium battery feels less like a gadget and more like a bill-control tool. It quietly shifts my solar energy into costly hours, provides useful backup, and demands little attention. I still monitor performance during rainy stretches, but the savings and reliability have made storage worthwhile for my home.
