I installed a 10 kWh lithium leisure battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly because our evening electricity use was getting expensive. We already had solar panels, but before adding storage, they exported most of their afternoon production and bought power back during the peak period. That felt wasteful.
Setup was easier than I expected. The installer mounted the battery on a garage wall, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and programmed charging to start after sunrise. I asked for a conservative reserve of 20 percent, so we would still have backup power during an outage. The app showed solar generation, household consumption, battery state of charge, and grid import clearly, which made the first few days surprisingly satisfying.
Previously, our typical summer evening demand ran from 5 to 10 p.m. Now, the battery carries the refrigerator, lights, router, and cooking appliances through that window. On sunny days, it is usually above 70 percent before dinner, and reaches around 25 percent by bedtime. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $185 to $112 over the first comparable billing cycle. It is not a dramatic overnight miracle, but saving about $73 while using electricity I generated myself feels worthwhile.
The only hiccup came during a week of cloudy weather. I noticed the battery stopped charging at midday, even though the panels were producing. The app showed a grid export limit warning. I power-cycled the inverter once, but the warning returned. A quick call to the installer revealed that the utility had temporarily changed its export setting. They updated the configuration remotely, and charging resumed that afternoon. Since then, I check the battery state of charge in the app every few days, but I no longer obsess over it.
For me, the benefit is simple: less peak-rate grid electricity and more efficient solar use.
