Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying so much expensive electricity during the evening peak. My system uses a lithium iron phospate battery, paired with 4.8 kW of rooftop solar and a hybrid inverter. I had expected the installation to be disruptive, but the crew finished in one day. The battery went on the garage wall, and the wiring was surprisingly tidy.
The first week was mostly about watching the energy monitoring app. I found myself checking it with my morning coffee, seeing solar power run the refrigerator, washing machine, and heat pump while charging the battery. By late afternoon, the battery was usually between 90 and 100 percent. Once our utility’s peak period started at 4 p.m., the system automatically switched to battery power. That small change has made the biggest difference to my bill.
Before installing the solar battery, we regularly used the grid while cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and charging laptops. Those hours were expensive. Now the battery covers most of that demand until bedtime. Our monthly electricity bill has dropped by roughly 35 to 45 percent, depending on cloudy weather and how much heating we use. It is not complete energy independence, but the savings are noticeable.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging for an evening even though it showed a healthy charge level. I checked the app and discovered a backup-reserve setting had changed from 20 percent to 80 percent. Once I restored the setting, normal operation returned. That taught me not to panic when the numbers look strange.
So far, I appreciate the quiet operation more than anything. There is no noticeable noise from the energy storage system, and the lithium battery requires very little attention. I still use grid electricity on long rainy stretches, but solar self-consumption is much higher, and peak-hour usage has become something I actively manage rather than simply accept.
