Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a home solar battery last spring, mainly because my electricity bill kept jumping during the evening peak period. My rooftop solar panels produced plenty of power during the day, but we were still buying expensive electricity after dinner, when the oven, lights, television, and heat pump were all running.
The battery has made a noticeable difference. It charges from excess solar power around midday, then automatically supplies the house from late afternoon until bedtime. Before the installation, our monthly bill averaged about $180 in summer. Since adding the battery storage system, it has usually been between $70 and $95, depending on the weather and how much air conditioning we use. The biggest savings come from avoiding peak-hour electricity rates rather than exporting every spare kilowatt-hour to the grid.
I chose a system using lithium ion phosphate batteries because I wanted a safer chemistry and a reasonable cycle life. The installer mounted the battery in the garage beside the inverter, and the setup was less disruptive than I expected. The electricians finished in one day, although I had to wait another week for the utility company to approve the grid connection.
One small issue came up during the first month. The battery stopped discharging overnight because the backup reserve had accidentally been set to 40 percent. That setting was useful during outages, but it meant I was keeping too much energy in reserve every night. I lowered it to 20 percent after checking the app, and the system immediately began using more stored solar energy during peak pricing.
I still check the monitoring app a few times a week, but otherwise the solar battery has been refreshingly automatic. It has not eliminated my electricity bill, and cloudy stretches still require grid power, but it has made our energy use feel much more predictable. For me, the practical benefit is simple: I use more of my own solar power and buy less expensive evening electricity.
