I installed a 10-kWh solar battery last spring after getting tired of watching our evening electricity use push the bill upward. During the day our rooftop panels produce more than we need, but cooking, laundry, and air conditioning all happen after sunset. The battery has made that timing much less painful.
Setup was simpler than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in our garage, added a hybrid inverter, and connected it to the main panel. I did not need to rewire the house. The only part that confused me was choosing a compatible charging cable. The manual mentioned a “lithium ion battery charger 48v,” but our system charges through the inverter, not a standalone charger. After one phone call, the installer explained the difference and labeled the spare connector clearly.
The biggest practical win is peak-hour savings. I set the battery to charge from solar until about 3:30 p.m., then discharge from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. On sunny days, it covers our refrigerator, internet equipment, lights, induction cooktop, and most of the heat pump. Our monthly bill used to average around $190; over the last four months, it has been closer to $115. That is roughly $75 saved per month, though I know winter will reduce the benefit.
I did have one small scare. The battery stopped discharging during a hot evening, even though the app showed 62% remaining. I checked the breaker and found it had tripped after a brief grid flicker. Resetting it restored everything, and the support team later lowered the inverter’s sensitivity setting. Since then, it has been uneventful.
I value the quiet automatic backup: it uses my solar power later and cuts peak rates without daily effort for me.
