I installed my solar battery last autumn, mainly because our electricity bills jumped whenever the heat pump ran during the evening peak. I chose a 10-kWh unit using lithium ferro phosphate cells, paired with my rooftop solar panels and hybrid inverter.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The crew mounted the battery in our garage, ran conduit neatly, and had the backup power working before dinner. I did spend an evening checking the monitoring app and changing the reserve setting. I settled on 20 percent, leaving enough capacity for outages without giving up too much daily savings.
The biggest difference appears between 4 and 9 p.m. Before the battery, our solar production disappeared after sunset, and the utility supplied everything during those expensive hours. Now the battery discharges steadily, covering the heat pump, refrigerator, lights, and dishwasher. On sunny days, it usually recharges fully before lunch, so I start the evening with stored energy rather than watching the meter climb.
My typical bill has fallen by roughly $45 to $60 a month in the higher-rate season. That is not a magical zero-dollar bill, but it is noticeable, especially when the battery charges from excess solar instead of expensive grid electricity.
I did have one mildly stressful troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the app showed the battery at 100 percent, yet the inverter was still pulling power from the grid that evening. I power-cycled the inverter once, checked that the backup reserve schedule had not reset, and waited about ten minutes. The system resumed normal discharge after that. Support later confirmed the update had temporarily disabled time-of-use control. It was annoying, but not a failure.
I now check the app each morning to confirm battery behaved overnight. For me, storage has made solar power feel much more practical.
