Solution Solar Battery
I installed a lithium 200ah battery beside my inverter last spring, and it has changed how I think about our electricity bill. Before that, our rooftop solar produced plenty during the day, but we still bought expensive power after dinner.
Now the battery charges from surplus solar in the afternoon and runs the house through the evening peak period. I set the reserve to 25%, so there’s usually enough left for a cloudy morning without making the system too conservative. On sunny days, I notice the biggest difference between 5:30 and 9:30 p.m.: lights, television, refrigerator, washing machine, and induction cooker are all running mostly on stored energy. Our monthly bill dropped from roughly $145 to $78, although rates and weather vary. I’m not claiming the battery eliminated the bill; it simply stopped those costly evening imports, which was the main reason I bought it.
The one hiccup happened during the first month. My monitoring app showed the battery at 100%, but the house was pulling from the grid. I found the inverter had switched to backup-only mode after a short outage. I restarted the inverter, checked the battery isolator, and updated its firmware. After that, it returned to self-consumption mode and has behaved normally. I appreciated this lesson because I now check the app rather than assuming everything is working.
For anyone considering a solar battery, I’d pay attention to usable capacity, not just the headline number. My lithium 200ah battery holds enough for our evening routine, but heavy heating would drain it much faster. I also like having blackout backup for the router and freezer, even though that wasn’t my original priority. The best result has been quieter, predictable energy use: I use more of my solar and worry less about peak prices.
