Solution Solar Battery
I installed a 10 kWh home battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly because our electricity rates jump sharply between 4 and 9 p.m. Before storage, that excess power went to the grid.
The first week was about learning the routine. I changed the battery to charge from solar during the day and discharge after dinner. My installer labeled the commissioning profile “lipefo4,” which looked odd in the app, but it became an easy reminder that the system was running its time-of-use schedule.
The biggest difference showed up on my bill, not on the wall. Before storage, our summer bills averaged about $185. Since adding the battery, they have been closer to $105, even though our household usage has barely changed. That is roughly $80 saved each month. I still import a little electricity overnight, especially after cloudy days, but the battery usually carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and my office equipment through the expensive evening window.
One minor hiccup happened during a three-day stretch of rain. The battery reached its reserve level earlier than expected, and I assumed something had failed. After checking the monitoring app, I realized the backup reserve was set to 30 percent. I lowered it temporarily to 15 percent, and the next sunny afternoon restored the cycle. That small lesson mattered: battery capacity is not the same as usable capacity when a reserve is protected.
I also appreciate that the inverter switches smoothly during brief outages. There is no noise or fuss; a few lights blink, then everything keeps running. I do glance at the state of charge every days, but maintenance has been minimal.
For me, the solar battery is less about energy independence slogans and more about avoiding those expensive evening purchases. The savings are predictable, and having backup power during outages is a bonus.
