I installed my home solar battery last spring, mainly because our utility introduced a painful evening peak rate. The solar panels covered most of our daytime usage, but we were still buying expensive electricity between 4:30 and 9:00.
I chose a 10-kWh LiFePO4-based unit with a hybrid inverter and kept the installation simple: battery cabinet in the garage, inverter beside it, and conduit running to the electrical panel. The installer finished in one day, and the monitoring app showed solar production, battery state of charge, and grid consumption before dinner. The product paperwork also mentioned “lifo4 battery 32650” cells, which I found oddly specific but reassuring for the battery pack description.
On a typical sunny day, the panels charge the battery to 100 percent by early afternoon. I set it to reserve 20 percent, so there’s still backup capacity if the grid fails. At 4:30, the system stops exporting and starts supplying the refrigerator, Wi-Fi equipment, lights, and later our induction cooktop. That change has been the biggest practical win. Before storage, our evening grid use averaged about 6 kWh. Now it is usually under 1 kWh, and our monthly bill has dropped roughly $35–$50, depending on weather and heating. It is not a dramatic “free electricity” story, but the savings are steady and easy to see in utility statements.
One hiccup happened during a cloudy week, when the battery stopped discharging at 63% even though the app looked normal. I power-cycled the inverter, checked the emergency shutoff switch, and restarted it after ten minutes. It recovered, and support later blamed a firmware update. Now I check the app weekly. For me, solar storage has made evening electricity cheaper and more predictable.
