I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. Before the battery, my solar panels produced plenty during the day, but most of us were at work, so the washing machine and dishwasher ran later when power cost more. That always felt backwards.
The setup was less complicated than I expected. The installer added the battery beside my hybrid inverter and connected it to the existing solar system in one afternoon. I spent the first week watching the monitoring app like a teenager checking a new phone. On sunny days, the battery charged by lunchtime and then carried the house from about 4 p.m. until midnight. Our evening grid usage dropped dramatically.
The biggest practical difference appeared on cloudy days. The battery did not magically eliminate the bill, but it still shifted whatever solar energy we collected into the evening. My monthly electricity bill fell by roughly 35–45%, depending on weather and how much heating we used. I also appreciate having battery backup during short outages. It switches quickly enough that the router stays on, although I have not tested it with every heavy appliance.
I spent a ridiculous amount of time researching “lifepo4 vs agm battery” before buying. AGM batteries were cheaper upfront in some quotes, but the usable capacity, cycle life, and lower maintenance of LiFePO4 made more sense for daily solar storage. I wanted a battery I could cycle regularly without worrying about wearing it out quickly.
My only minor annoyance was the first week of settings. The battery was charging from the grid overnight instead of waiting for solar. A support technician adjusted the time-of-use schedule through the app, and it has behaved properly since. I now check the state of charge occasionally, but otherwise the system is very hands-off. For me, the real value is not being completely off-grid; it is using more of my own solar power and avoiding the most expensive evening rates.
