I installed a lifepo4 solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the evening peak. My rooftop solar system was already producing more power than we used at lunchtime, but I was still drawing from the grid after dinner when rates were highest. The unused solar felt like money left on the roof.

The setup was simpler than I expected. The installer added a 10 kWh battery beside the inverter, connected it to the home energy management system, and configured it to charge from solar first. On sunny days, the battery usually reaches full charge by mid-afternoon. Once the sun goes down, it runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and occasionally the washing machine. I try not to run the electric oven from the battery because that drains it quickly.

The biggest difference shows up on my bill. Before adding energy storage, my evening usage was often the most expensive part of the month. Since installing the solar battery, my grid consumption after sunset has dropped dramatically. My monthly bill is typically $70–$100 lower, although winter savings are smaller because of shorter days and more heating use. I also like seeing the battery’s state of charge in the app; it makes our household energy habits much easier to understand.

I did have one minor scare during the first week. The battery stopped discharging overnight even though it showed plenty of charge. I eventually discovered that the backup reserve had accidentally been set to 80 percent, leaving most of the capacity untouched. After lowering the reserve to 20 percent, everything worked normally.

So far, the lithium battery has been quiet, reliable, and practically invisible. I am not completely off-grid, but I am using far less peak-rate electricity, which was the main reason I bought it. The best part is waking up and seeing that yesterday’s solar power carried us through most of the evening.
