Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10 kWh home battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive grid electricity during the evening peak. Before the battery, our solar panels produced plenty at lunchtime, but most of that power flowed back to the utility for a modest credit. At dinner, we pulled electricity back at nearly triple the rate. That felt ridiculous.
The 10 kWh battery now charges automatically from midday solar. By about 4:30 p.m., it usually reaches 95%, and the inverter switches our house over to stored energy. We run the refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, dishwasher, and sometimes the heat pump from it. On a sunny day, we still have 30–40% remaining at bedtime, so I leave a reserve for the morning.
That schedule has made the biggest difference to my bill. My average monthly electricity charge fell from about $185 to $112, despite similar usage. The exact saving changes with weather, but I have measured roughly $60–$80 in monthly peak-hour savings during summer. I did not expect the battery to pay for itself instantly, but seeing a lower bill every month makes the purchase feel practical rather than theoretical.
My only annoying moment came after a firmware update. The battery showed “standby” even though the panels were producing. I checked the app, cycled the inverter communication switch, and waited ten minutes. Nothing changed. Support asked me to power down the battery for five minutes, then restart it. That cleared the fault, and the stored energy began rising again. I now keep the restart instructions taped inside the electrical cabinet.
One detail I appreciate is the battery uses a lifepo4 prismatic cell design. It runs quietly, shows no odor, and its temperature has stayed reassuringly stable in our garage. For me, reliable solar storage matters more than flashy features.
