Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed my first solar battery system last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My rooftop panels already covered much of our daytime use, but after dinner the house still pulled power when rates were highest.
The setup was less intimidating than I expected. I chose a 5 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with an inverter and a lifepo4 bms 12v battery module. The installer mounted it in the garage, added a shutoff, and connected it to the solar controller. The app showed charge level, solar production, and household load without needing much tinkering. I set it to charge from excess midday solar and discharge between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., which is where I noticed the biggest difference.
Before storage, our utility bill averaged about $145 during summer. After adding the battery, it fell to roughly $92, even though our usage stayed fairly similar. That is around $53 saved each month, mostly because we stopped pulling grid power during peak hours. I also shifted the dishwasher and laundry into sunny afternoons, so the battery could handle television, lights, refrigerator, and Wi-Fi overnight. Seeing the graph stay nearly flat during dinner feels surprisingly satisfying.
My only real hiccup happened during a cloudy week. The battery stopped discharging at 35%, even though the app displayed plenty of capacity. I initially assumed the solar inverter had failed, but support explained that low-temperature protection had kicked in because our unheated garage dropped close to freezing. I raised the battery enclosure slightly off the concrete floor and added a small insulated cover with ventilation. It has worked normally since, and I appreciate that the battery management system protected the cells. That protection gives me confidence, and the monthly savings make the investment worthwhile to me.
