Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10kWh lifepo4 battery for solar energy storage in my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during peak hours. My rooftop solar already covered most daytime use, but our evening cooking, laundry, and heat-pump demand arrived after production dropped. Before the battery, my monthly bill averaged about $185. After switching to self-consumption mode, it has usually landed between $92 and $115, depending on weather. That difference has been more noticeable than I expected.
The battery charges from solar between late morning and mid-afternoon, then the inverter sends that stored energy to the house from roughly 4 p.m. until bedtime. On sunny days, we finish the evening with 25 to 35 percent remaining. I still leave that reserve because outages are common here, and the backup power has already kept the refrigerator, internet router, and a few lights running twice.
My favorite practical feature is the app. I can see solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption without walking into the garage. During the first week, I noticed the battery was discharging at noon even though the panels were producing well. The installer had selected a backup-priority setting instead of solar self-use. One settings change fixed it, and the battery began filling normally. I appreciated finding that myself rather than assuming the lithium battery was faulty.
Installation was quieter and cleaner than I imagined, although the unit needed a wall and space around it. I have not noticed any odor or meaningful noise. The biggest lesson is that battery storage does not eliminate grid use; cloudy stretches still drain it quickly. Even so, this solar battery has made our energy routine more predictable, reduced peak-hour purchases, and given me outage protection. For my home, the savings and peace of mind justify the upfront cost.
