I installed a 10-kWh LiFePO4 home battery last spring, mainly because my electricity bill was getting painful during the evening peak hours. My rooftop solar panels already covered most daytime use, but without storage, I was sending surplus back to the grid and buying it back after dinner.
The change was noticeable from the first full month. I set the battery to charge from solar during the day and discharge between 4 and 9 p.m., when my utility’s rates are highest. Before storage, our monthly bill averaged around $180 in summer. It now sits near $95, although weather and air-conditioning use still make it vary. On cloudy days it may reach only 55%, so I still buy some grid power; the system has not eliminated my bill, just reduced it.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment in January. The app showed the inverter online, but the battery stayed at 32% for hours. I checked the breaker, restarted the battery controller, and discovered a loose communications cable after a cold night. Once reseated, it resumed charging normally. I appreciated fixing that myself instead of waiting for an installer, though I now check the connection every few months.
