I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery in my garage last spring because our evening electricity rates had become ridiculous. The solar panels already covered most daytime use, but after dinner we were pulling expensive grid power for lights, heat pump, and laundry. I wanted more self-consumption, not another complicated gadget to babysit.
The installer helped me choose the lifepo4 battery capacity for our actual usage rather than simply selling me the biggest unit. They mounted the battery beside the inverter, added a backup gateway, and connected it to the existing solar battery system. It showed solar generation, battery state of charge, and grid import.
The biggest difference appears between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. The battery charges from surplus solar during the afternoon, then discharges automatically when rates rise. Before installation, my utility bill averaged about $185 in summer. This year, with similar weather and habits, it has been around $112. That is not entirely battery savings, since I also became more careful, but the evening grid usage on my statement is noticeably smaller.
I did have one minor scare. After a firmware update, the app showed the battery at 0% even though the inverter display said 62%. I switched off automatic discharge and contacted support. They had me restart the gateway, then wait about ten minutes for it to resynchronize. The battery never actually stopped working; the monitoring data was wrong. Still, I now glance at the physical indicator before assuming the app is perfect.
What I appreciate most is how quiet and boring the system has become. It runs in the background, keeps a reserve for outages, and lets me use my own solar energy after sunset. I am not claiming it erased my bill, but the combination of solar panels, battery storage, time-of-use rates, and sensible lifepo4 battery capacity has made our costs much easier to predict. For me, that predictability matters as much as the savings.
