I installed a 10-kWh LiFePO4 battery bank last spring after getting tired of watching our electricity bill jump every evening. We already had a 6.4-kW rooftop solar array, but our utility charges peak rates from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m., exactly when dinner, laundry, and air conditioning were happening.
I chose a wall-mounted battery with an integrated inverter and paid an electrician to add a critical-load subpanel for the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and garage door. Setup wasn't painless: the installer found an undersized cable between the main panel and inverter, so the job took an extra afternoon. Once running, the monitoring app showed solar production, battery state-of-charge, and household consumption clearly enough that I stopped guessing about where power was going.
The biggest difference is peak-hour savings. On sunny days, the panels fill the battery by about 2:00 p.m. At 4:00, the battery takes over automatically, and we use stored energy instead of buying expensive grid electricity. Our utility bill used to average around $210 in summer. Since installation, it has been closer to $118, despite similar weather and thermostat settings. That is roughly $924 saved over six months—not a miracle, but enough to make the payback feel real.
I also like having backup during outages. A brief storm-related interruption last month lasted three hours; the lights flickered once, then the battery carried everything on the subpanel without me touching anything.
My only nuisance has been balancing. One morning the app reported a cell-voltage warning after several cloudy days. I checked connections, reduced the inverter charge rate temporarily, and used a lifepo4 battery balance charger on the removable auxiliary pack, following the manufacturer's instructions. After that, the readings returned to normal and the warning disappeared.
I now keep the battery reserve at 25% and check the app weekly, rather than obsessing daily. It has been reassuring overall.
