I installed my home battery last spring, mostly because our evening electricity rates had become ridiculous. My rooftop panels already covered daytime use, but without storage, I was sending cheap power to the grid and buying it back after dinner. I chose a 10-kWh lifepo4 batter after comparing several lithium iron phosphate options. The installer mounted it in the garage, connected the inverter, and set the battery to charge from solar first. Setup took one long afternoon, including app pairing and a surprisingly tedious Wi-Fi reset. Once it was running, I stopped thinking about it, which is probably the best compliment I can give an energy storage system.
The biggest difference shows up between 5 and 9 p.m. Instead of pulling from the grid, our lights, refrigerator, router, and heat pump run from stored solar power. On sunny days, the battery reaches full charge by midafternoon and carries us through most of the evening peak. My monthly bill fell by roughly 30 to 40 percent, even though our usage habits barely changed. That saving matters more to me than the app's colorful graphs, although I admit I check them far too often. The battery also gives a little backup during outages, enough to keep the modem, lights, and freezer going.
I did have one minor scare in July. The monitoring app showed the battery sitting at 12 percent while the sun was blazing, and solar charging appeared unavailable. I checked the breaker, restarted the inverter, and discovered a loose communications cable left from some garage work. After reconnecting it, the battery resumed charging within minutes. That small problem taught me that solar battery systems are not completely set-and-forget, but it was manageable without a service call.
For me, the combination of peak-hour savings and quiet operation has made storage worthwhile.
