I installed a 5kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my inverter last spring. I already had solar panels, but by dinner time their production was gone and we were buying grid power at the worst hours. The battery changed that routine more noticeably than I expected.
I set the system to charge from excess solar during the day and discharge from 4:00pm to 9:00pm. On sunny days, it usually reaches 100 percent before lunch, then runs our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and sometimes the washing machine through dinner. I still use the grid for the oven and heat pump most days now, so I am not pretending this is whole-home backup.
The most satisfying difference is on the bill. Before storage, my summer bills averaged about $180. After adding the battery, they have been closer to $95, despite similar air-conditioning use. My utility still charges a connection fee, and I know the savings depend on sunlight, but avoiding those peak-hour rates has made the payback feel real.
One small troubleshooting moment came in August. The battery stopped discharging one evening, and the monitoring app showed a communication warning. I restarted the inverter, checked the network cable, and found a loose plug after cleaning around the equipment. It recovered within minutes. I also learned that the lifepo4 4s bms setting matters: the battery installer had left a conservative low-voltage cutoff, which reduced usable capacity slightly. After confirming the manufacturer’s limits, I adjusted it and gained roughly half a kilowatt-hour of practical storage without chasing unsafe numbers.
For me, the biggest benefit is predictability rather than independence. I can check the solar battery state of charge before cooking, and know what the evening will cost. The installation has not eliminated my electric bill, but it has made household energy use easier to manage and given me confidence that the next outage will be manageable.
