I installed a lifepo4 48 100 battery in my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the evening peak. My rooftop solar already covered daytime use, but without storage, the extra production disappeared into the grid while we cooked, showered, and ran the dishwasher.
The installation was easier than expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the inverter, added a backup-loads panel, and finished the wiring in an afternoon. I spent the first week checking the monitoring app. It showed solar generation, battery state of charge, and household consumption in real time, which helped me understand where our energy went.
The biggest difference appears between 4 and 9 p.m. Once the sun goes down, the inverter pulls from the battery instead of the utility, so our peak-hour usage has dropped dramatically. Before installation, our bill averaged about $180. During sunny months, it now lands around $95 to $115, depending on air-conditioning and laundry. That is not an apples-to-apples comparison, but the reduction is obvious.
I also like having protection from outages. During one storm outage, the refrigerator, Wi-Fi router, and a few lights stayed on, although I learned that “backup” does not mean the house runs normally.
My troubleshooting moment happened when the battery stopped charging at noon. The app showed a communication warning, so I checked the cable between the battery and inverter, restarted the system, and waited. After ten minutes, charging resumed. I suspect a loose connector, but I have not seen the warning since. That incident made me appreciate accessible monitoring and a good installation manual.
I do not claim the battery eliminated my electric bill; winter clouds and heavy loads still matter. However, shifting solar power into the evening has made the system useful every day, not just during a blackout. The best part is seeing daytime solar energy cover dinner, laundry, and evening television instead of watching it flow away unused.
