I installed a 10kWh lifepo4 48 battery bank in my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. The setup was less dramatic than I expected, but not completely painless.
My installer mounted the inverter beside the panel and ran a new cable through the wall to the battery. We spent most of the afternoon checking the battery management system settings and confirming the solar charge controller was communicating properly. I appreciated that part because the app initially showed the battery charging while the panels were producing almost nothing. It turned out the installer had selected a demonstration mode. Once that was corrected, the readings made sense.
On a normal sunny day, my rooftop solar fills the battery by midafternoon. At 4 p.m. the system switches from grid power to stored energy, and it carries the refrigerator, lights, router, and my office computer through the expensive hours. That shift has been the biggest practical benefit.
Before installation, our utility bill averaged about $185 per month during summer. Last summer, with similar air-conditioning use, it averaged $112. The difference is not pure profit because I financed the equipment, but seeing roughly $70 less on the bill each month still feels worthwhile. On cloudy days, the battery usually reaches only 60 or 70 percent, so I reserve it for dinner and avoid running the dryer after sunset.
One evening I noticed the app reporting zero output even though the battery was full. The inverter had tripped after a brief power flicker. I reset it using the manual switch, then waited five minutes before reconnecting it. The battery management system came back online, and support confirmed the event was harmless. Since then, I added a notification for inverter faults and check the app once each morning before breakfast.
