I installed a lifepo4 36v 100ah battery bank last spring, mainly to stop sending so much solar power back to the grid. My rooftop array is modest, about 4.8 kW, and before adding storage I watched the inverter export power all afternoon, then bought electricity during the expensive evening window. The battery was the first upgrade that noticeably changed our routine. I set it to charge from solar and discharge between 4 and 9 p.m., when our utility rate is highest.
On sunny days it usually reaches 100% by early afternoon. After dinner, the battery runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and a heat-pump water heater without any drama. Watching the inverter dashboard, I typically see 6 to 8 kWh come out overnight, depending on the weather. Our evening consumption used to cost roughly $2.50 to $3.00 on high-rate days; now it is often under a dollar. That works out to about $45 to $60 saved per month, not a miraculous zero-dollar bill, but a meaningful reduction I can actually see.
The only hiccup came during a week of rain. The state-of-charge reading suddenly fell from 48% to 12% overnight, even though our loads were normal. I first blamed the battery, but the monitoring app showed the inverter had briefly lost its communication link. I shut down the system in the manufacturer’s recommended order, waited a few minutes, and restarted it. The reading returned to 46%, and the battery continued charging normally the next day. That small scare taught me to check wiring, firmware, and data connections before assuming the solar battery itself has failed.
For me, the biggest benefit is not independence from the grid but shifting when I use energy I generated. The lithium iron phosphate chemistry feels reassuring; after months capacity looks unchanged and the system has been quiet.
