I installed a 10-kWh home solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during peak hours. My rooftop array is modest, so the battery was less about selling surplus power and more about shifting it into the evening.
The unit uses a lifepo4 280ah. battery bank with a hybrid inverter. Setup was fairly painless. The installer mounted the cabinet in my garage, connected it to the existing solar inverter, and programmed a 20% reserve. I appreciated that the app showed solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption on one screen, although its first week of readings took some getting used to.
Before storage, my evening electricity use came straight from the grid. The oven, dishwasher, heat pump, and television could easily overlap with the utility peak rate. Now the battery charges from midday solar and starts discharging around 4 p.m. On an average weekday, I see roughly 6–8 kWh supplied from storage before midnight. That has cut my peak imports dramatically. My monthly bill has fallen from about $185 to $110, though weather and utility rates obviously change that result.
The most useful surprise was not the headline capacity but the quiet battery behavior. It runs silently, and the inverter transitions between solar, battery, and grid power without noticeable flicker. I can run laundry after sunset without feeling that I’m wasting money.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the app reported “battery offline,” even though the cabinet indicator was green. I power-cycled the communications gateway, waited five minutes, and restarted the inverter connection. The status returned normally, and the stored energy was untouched. Since then, I check the system remotely every few days, but I have not needed to call support again.
For me, the real win is predictable evening self-consumption and lower peak charges.
