I installed a 10kWh home solar battery last spring, and the biggest surprise was how quickly our evening routine changed. Before it, our solar panels exported most daytime power and we bought expensive electricity after dinner, especially when the heat pump was running.
I chose a battery assembled with lifepo4 280ah grade a cells because the installer explained that LiFePO4 chemistry should handle frequent cycling without much drama. The installation itself was refreshingly boring: an electrician mounted the inverter and battery in our utility room, added a breaker, and connected the energy meter to the solar monitoring app. My only complaint was the app took a few days to display sensible charge figures; initially it showed yesterday's production under today's date.
Once the settings were corrected, I set the battery to charge from solar during the day and discharge from 4:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. That simple schedule has made the clearest difference to our electricity bill. On sunny days, the battery reaches full by mid-afternoon, so our household runs on stored power through dinner, laundry, and the first part of the night.
Our monthly bill used to average about $185 and now it is usually between $105 and $125, depending on weather and utility rates. That is roughly $60–$80 in monthly savings, although I do not pretend the battery pays for itself overnight. The real benefit is avoiding peak-hour rates, not chasing a perfect zero bill.
During a week of cloudy weather, the system ran down to about 18% before sunrise. I briefly worried because the inverter app showed a warning about low reserve. I called the installer, but the fix was simply changing the backup reserve from 20% to 15% and clearing an old communication alert. Since then, it has been uneventful, and I appreciate that more than flashy features most days.
