I installed a 5kW solar array and a 25.6V LiFePO4 battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. Before the battery, daytime solar power often went unused after the kettle, washing machine, and water heater had finished. Now the battery charges by early afternoon and carries our house through the peak period.
The biggest surprise was how quickly the savings became visible. Our utility has a steep rate from 4pm to 9pm, so I set the solar battery to discharge during those hours. On sunny days, it usually covers the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and most cooking. We still use the grid occasionally, especially when dinner includes the electric oven, but our monthly bill dropped by roughly $45–$60 compared with the same months last year. That is not a dramatic promise of energy independence, but it feels genuinely worthwhile in a small home.
