I installed a 10-kWh LiFePO4/LFP battery beside my inverter last spring, and the biggest surprise was how quickly it changed our evenings. Before the solar energy storage system, our rooftop panels exported most afternoon power, then we bought electricity back from the grid after dinner. Now the battery charges through the sunny hours and runs our refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat-pump water heater through the expensive evening period.
My first full bill with the battery was $41, compared with $128 the previous month. Weather and rates were different, so I am not claiming the battery alone caused every dollar of that drop, but the peak-hour savings have been obvious. On sunny weekdays, the app shows the battery filling by about 2:30, then discharging from 4:00 to 9:00, which is exactly when our utility rate jumps. We now use far less grid electricity during those hours, and my monthly bills have settled around $55–$70 instead of $110–$140.
The only hiccup happened during a cloudy week when the battery reached zero earlier than expected. I noticed the inverter switching to grid power repeatedly, and the app showed a confusing “reserve protection” warning. I called the installer, but solved it myself after finding the backup reserve had accidentally been set to 40%. Lowering that reserve to 15% restored normal operation, and I learned not to change settings while firmware updates are running.
Since then, the lithium iron phosphate chemistry has felt reassuring: it is quiet, requires no maintenance, and the battery cabinet stays cool in my garage. I also appreciate that the system keeps essential circuits alive during short outages, although it cannot run our whole house indefinitely.
