I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 solar battery last spring, mainly to stop sending my afternoon solar power back to the grid for nothing. Before that, my rooftop panels produced plenty at lunchtime, but we still bought electricity after dinner. The battery has changed that routine more than I expected.

My setup uses a hybrid inverter and a 6.6kW solar array. I set the battery to charge from solar and discharge between 4 and 9 p.m., when our utility's peak rate applies. On sunny days, it reaches 100% by midafternoon. By bedtime, the house has used 5 to 7 kWh from storage, covering cooking, lights, the television, and our heat-pump water heater. Our evening grid consumption fell from about 9 kWh to 2 kWh on average. That reduced our monthly bill by around $55 during summer, although cloudy weeks are noticeably less impressive.

The surprise has been the quiet, automatic operation. I do not hear anything from the battery cabinet, and the monitoring app shows state of charge clearly. I occasionally compare its figures with the inverter data because the app can lag by a few minutes, but the energy flow has been consistent.

I built the pack around a lifepo 6s configuration for a small workshop backup experiment, separate from the professionally installed home battery. That project taught me to respect fuses, busbars, cell balancing, and proper battery management systems; I would not recommend improvising high-voltage storage. For the main system, certified installation and a solid warranty were worth the extra cost.

After six months, my honest view is that the battery is not magic: winter production still matters, and its upfront price means savings take time. However, using my own solar power during peak hours feels practical, predictable, and far more satisfying than watching it disappear into the grid.
