For the first time I checked my electricity app at 9:30pm and saw no grid power coming in, I honestly felt the battery had finally paid for itself.
I installed a 10kWh home solar storage battery last spring, paired with 5.4kW rooftop panels and a hybrid inverter. The cells are lfp catl, and although I am not an electrical engineer, I chose that chemistry because several local installers said lithium iron phosphate was a sensible, safer option for daily cycling.
The installation itself took most of a day. The crew mounted the battery in my garage, ran conduit neatly, and showed me how to set a backup reserve. I left 25% reserved for outages, while the rest could be used for time-of-use savings. That setting has made the biggest difference to my bill.
Before storage, I bought expensive electricity between 4pm and 9pm, especially when cooking dinner, running the heat pump, and charging our plug-in hybrid. Now the solar battery fills through the afternoon and carries those loads after sunset. My average monthly bill fell from roughly $185 to $105, though winter bills still rise when cloudy weather limits solar production.
One evening the app showed “standby” while the house was pulling power from the grid. I first panicked, but the battery was simply below its reserve after two rainy days. I changed the charging schedule to allow a small overnight top-up during the cheaper period. Since then it has behaved normally, and I have stopped obsessively checking it.
The best part is not total energy independence; it is quieter, more predictable spending. I still use the grid, but my solar self-consumption is much higher, and peak electricity purchases are rare. After nine months, I would choose it again.
