Nighttime used to be when my electricity meter ran fastest. Since installing an in-home solar battery system last spring, I now use stored solar power after sunset instead of buying expensive grid electricity. The biggest difference has been during peak hours.
My setup is a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery connected to an inverter with battery for home use, paired with 6.6 kW of rooftop solar panels. On a sunny day, the battery reaches full charge by mid-afternoon. At 4 p.m., it starts covering the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat-pump water heater. When my teenagers come home and start cooking, the battery handles much of that demand too.
Before the battery, our evening usage regularly pushed us into the higher tariff period. My bill averaged about $185. Since the installation, it has generally landed between $95 and $120, depending on weather and heating. That is roughly $60 to $90 saved each month, which feels more meaningful than watching a phone app claim theoretical savings. I still import power on cloudy winter days, but the solar battery reduces those expensive evening hours noticeably.
One surprise was the firmware update. The monitoring app showed the battery at zero percent even though the inverter display showed 42 percent. I called the installer, who explained that the app had lost its connection after our router rebooted. Reconnecting the Wi-Fi fixed it in five minutes; the battery had never stopped working.
I am careful not to oversell the system. The upfront cost was substantial, and our payback will take years. Still, the combination of solar panels, battery storage, and appliance timing has made our bills steadier. I now run the dishwasher before sunset, keep a reserve for outages, and feel that our home energy use is working with the sun rather than against it.
